DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM Starved Rock Kennel Club in 2002 started a program called PAWS for Reading in the local headstart programs in Ottawa. Members of the club and their canine companions went into the pre-school and read to the children giving them chance to interact with the dogs. After many years of success we started a program at the Kimes Elementary School in Streator IL. For many years now we have had unparalleled success with the program and have been responsible for the children's increased reading scores. in 2012, PAWS added Marquette Academy in Ottawa to the PAWS for Reading program schedule.
BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM Each student is assigned books to read each quarter (a leg) that match their ability. If they read their assigned books they earn a "leg". At the end of the school year at the awards banquet, each student that earns all four "legs" is given an award by the kennel club. Each participant is also presented with a small award. The high reader is awarded a special prize.
